Getting to know Evelyn David

Evelyn David is the pseudonym for a pair of mystery writers, Marian Borden and Rhonda Dossett. Marian lives in New York and is the author of ten nonfiction books on a wide variety of topics ranging from veterans benefits to playgroups for toddlers! For more information on these books, please visit her web site at http://www.marianedelmanborden.com  Rhonda lives in Muskogee, Oklahoma, is the director of the coal program for the state, and in her spare time enjoys imagining and writing funny, scary mysteries. Marian and Rhonda write their mystery series via the internet. While many fans who attend mystery conventions have now chatted with both halves of Evelyn David, Marian and Rhonda have yet to meet in person.

Let’s get to know Evelyn David.

Patricia: What are your favorite things to do when you’re not reading or writing?

Rhonda: I love watching dramas on television and working in my flower gardens in the spring/summer.

Marian: I love to cook. When I'm not figuring out novel ways to create murder and mayhem, I'm scanning food blogs.

Patricia: What’s your favorite color? Why?

Rhonda: Blue. It's the color of water and I've always loved swimming and being out on the lake. It makes me feel happy.

Marian: I also love the color blue. I find it soothing, but I definitely went through an "orange" period in my life.

Patricia: How would you describe yourself, personality wise?

Rhonda: I'm a Type-A personality with a sense of humor. I'm not really a "people" person. I enjoy time alone with my books, movies, and computer - and dislike crowds and noise.

Marian: I think I have a split personality. I enjoy being around people and hearing their "stories," but then I definitely need quiet and solitude.

Patricia: Do you like to travel? If so, what are some of your favorite places to go and/or what was your favorite vacation?

Rhonda: I love to travel, but I don't like doing formal tours. I love to just spend a week at the beach sitting in a lounger and reading. My favorite vacation to date was spent in Nags Head, North Carolina, exploring the Outer Banks.

Marian: I always like traveling in retrospect. When I'm in the midst of it, I miss my home, my familiar surroundings. But when I think back, I've had a wonderful time. I loved visiting England and Scotland, adored Prince Edward Island in Canada (they have the best regional tea manufacturer), and would love to go back to Napa.

Patricia: How would you complete this sentence? If I won a million dollars, I would  ------

Rhonda: Pay all my bills and then buy a small house on a lake. Of course a million dollars doesn't go as far any more so I'd still have to work – and write mysteries.

Marian:  Besides donating some to charity, giving some to my kids, I'd love to have extra dollars to go to the theater whenever I want.

Evelyn David is the author of the Brianna Sullivan Mysteries (9 to date), The Sullivan Investigations Mystery series (3 novels plus two short stories) and the stand-alone mystery, Zoned for Murder.

    1. Rhonda and Marian,
I'm pleased to have you both here today. You amaze me! I admire the way you work together to write such wonderful mysteries. Seriously, I don't know how you do it!
I've read and loved "Murder Doubles Back" and "Zoned for Murder." In fact, I've added both books to my "Best Of" list on Shelfari. (The link is on the right side of your post.)
      Happy Writing!

  2. It's fascinating that Rhonda and Marian can work so well as a team when they've never met in person. There's a story in that relationship, for sure. I wish you both great success and a continued partnership.

  4. What an enjoyable interview but Muskogee, Oklahoma caught my attention the most since I'm from Oklahoma. Fascinating that two people can write so well together by corresponding on the Net.

  5. Terrific interview, and I can relate. I have some friend I consider close friends whom I've never met in person, but we've corresponded for years. Isn't it amazing that the two of you can write together so well without ever having met?

    1. Hi Marja,

Marian and I have had years to practice the trans-country writing. We finished the first full draft of Murder Off the Books without even talking on the phone. Doing everything by email really makes you focus and organize your thoughts. Of course we had to edit that first draft down by half. But it was a fun experience and we just kept going.

Note: The Northern Half of Evelyn David is in the middle of packing for a household move this week. She won't be on-line as often as I am. We do "team" promotion too!

  6. It's great that you can co-author novels together. I've done it with my two sons and know that it takes effort to make the work appear seamless.

    1. Hi Jacqueline, thanks for stopping by. Marian and I each write all characters, going back and forth over each scene multiple times. In the end we're never sure who wrote what line. We do most of our editing and some formatting as we go - contrary to popular advice. By the time we have our first full draft we are 80 percent done.

  7. Very interesting, Gang. I've written a book with my youngest daughter (Murder a Cappella) who is a writer also. But I knew her. Since you two have never met, my questions is - how did you happen to get together to write books? I understand that you can do a lot via the Internet. And I know there are sites such as e-Harmony and the like to get people together who are looking for a relationship. But surely there is not a site to get writers together. I know. I'm old and don't understand the working of things today. Still ... As I understand, Marian was writing non-fiction. So if I were looking around for someone to write mysteries with, I'd have by-passed Marian right off. There must be a great story - perhaps a new comic mystery - in this. Thanks to all three of you for a great interview.
